Overview:
The Eastern Cape Department of Education invites applications for 30 General Assistant positions. These roles provide essential support in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient school environment. General Assistants are vital to the day-to-day operations of schools and learner support, especially in special needs education settings.
Key Responsibilities:
-Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of school buildings, classrooms, and grounds
-Support learners with special needs (mobility, feeding, toileting) under the guidance of educators
-Handle laundry duties, especially in hostel environments
-Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned, used safely, and stored properly
-Maintain sanitary and hygienic conditions across all facilities
-Assist with preparing classrooms and activity spaces for school functions
-Participate in the implementation of learner care and safety procedures
-Perform messenger or delivery duties as required by the school
Requirements and Skills:
-Grade 9 or equivalent school leaving certificate
-Previous experience in cleaning, maintenance, or learner support roles will be advantageous
-Must be physically fit and able to assist with lifting and moving items
-Compassionate and patient, particularly when working with learners with special needs
-Basic knowledge of health, hygiene, and safety protocols
-Strong sense of responsibility, punctuality, and discipline
-Proof of participation in PEYI programme will be considered an advantage
-Preference will be given to candidates residing in the area where the post is located
